October is our last meeting of the year and our program will be a grafting workshop. Way back in August, our meeting topic was propagating “Pride of Hankins” rootstock so hopefully many members now have rootstock available and are ready to do some grafting. And it is a good time of the year to get out the pruners and tidy up scraggly plants and collect some graftwood for the meeting. We’ll set up a few tables around the room and work in groups to polish up our technique. If you are able to cut graftwood the afternoon of the meeting it would be best, since a freshly cut scion is best. You can wrap your graftwood in a dampened paper towel and store it in the refrigerator (top shelf) for a few days. Be sure to carefully label the variety and bring it along to the meeting to share. When we get started again in March, 2010, we’ll all want a report on grafting successes….and maybe a mini show entry or two! |
